👶 Free Childcare in England 2026: What Parents Need to Know

If you’re expecting a baby or have a little one under 3, you’ve probably heard that funded childcare has expanded in England.

But between eligibility rules, term-date start times and nursery availability, it can still feel confusing.

Here’s a simple, up-to-date guide to what’s available in 2026 — and what it means for your family.

📢 What’s Available Now?

As of 2026, working parents in England can access funded childcare from 9 months old right up until school age.

Depending on your eligibility, you may receive:

  • 15 funded hours per week

  • Up to 30 funded hours per week

These hours are usually offered during term time (38 weeks), but many nurseries allow you to stretch them across the full year.

The aim is simple:
💷 Reduce childcare costs
👩💼 Support parents returning to work
🏫 Improve access to early education

🧑💼 Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for the working-parent offer, you must:

  • Be working (or about to start work)

  • Earn at least the equivalent of 16 hours per week at National Minimum Wage

  • Earn under £100,000 per year per parent

  • Live in England

Parents on maternity/paternity leave, self-employed parents and those on zero-hours contracts can still qualify.

There are separate entitlements for children with SEND or from low-income families.

🕒 When Do the Hours Start?

This is the part that catches many parents out.

Funded hours do not start on your child’s birthday.
They begin at the start of the next school term:

  • 1 January

  • 1 April

  • 1 September

Example:
If your baby turns 9 months in October, funding begins in January — not immediately.

This can affect your return-to-work planning and budgeting.

🧾 Do You Need to Apply?

Yes — it’s not automatic.

You must apply through your Government Childcare Account (the same place you manage Tax-Free Childcare).

You’ll also need to reconfirm your eligibility every 3 months.
If you forget, your funded hours can pause until you update your details.

🍎 Is It Completely Free?

Not always.

The government funds the childcare hours, but nurseries can charge for:

  • Meals

  • Snacks

  • Nappies

  • Trips

  • Consumables

  • Additional hours beyond your entitlement

Every provider is different, so it’s worth checking what’s included.

🤰 Why Expectant Parents Should Plan Early

Even if your baby isn’t here yet, understanding childcare early helps you:

  • Budget more accurately 📊

  • Plan your return to work

  • Join waiting lists in good time

  • Choose the right nursery or childminder

  • Avoid last-minute stress

Demand for places has increased since the expansion — especially for under-2s — so early planning really pays off.
